Signs You Have a Flea Infestation

Fleas are small, fast, and can be hard to spot until the problem grows. Early detection is key to protecting your family and pets. Look for these common signs:

1. Pets Scratching or Biting Frequently

If your dog or cat is suddenly scratching, biting, or licking themselves more than usual, fleas could be the cause. Flea bites irritate their skin and can cause hair loss or redness.

2. Visible Fleas on Your Pet

Adult fleas are tiny, dark brown, and move quickly through fur. You might see them jumping or running along your pet’s coat.

3. Flea Dirt

Flea dirt looks like tiny black specks on your pet’s skin or bedding. This “dirt” is actually flea feces, which contains digested blood. To check, place it on a damp paper towel—if it turns reddish-brown, it’s likely flea dirt.

4. Bites on Humans

Fleas also bite people, especially around the ankles, feet, and legs. Bites appear as small, red, itchy bumps in clusters.

5. Irritated or Red Skin

Pets or family members may develop rashes or bumps where fleas bite. Persistent scratching can lead to secondary infections.

6. Fleas in Your Home

Fleas can hide in carpets, furniture, bedding, and cracks in floors. Look for small jumping insects in areas where pets sleep or spend time.

7. Sudden Allergic Reactions in Pets

Some pets are allergic to flea saliva. Even a single flea bite can trigger severe itching, swelling, or hot spots.
